Cold War Timeline

Yalta Conference

1945

The Yalta conference was a meeting in 1945 of the three WWII allies, this included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. The point of this conference was to decide what to do with Germany once they had been defeated from WWII. This event was significant to the Cold War because this conference in a way hinted at a war because there were tensions over issues.

George F. Kennan outlines containment policy

1946

In 1946 Kennan outlined the containment policy. This was important to the Cold War because it prevented communism from spreading.

Truman Doctrine

1947

Harry S. Truman established the Truman Doctrine in 1947. This foreign policy was significant to the Cold War because it was aimed to stop the spread of communism. The United States would also help enemies of the Soviet Union economically or with weapons.

Marshall Plan aid economic recovery in Europe

1948

The Marshall Plan was a plan to help aid Western Europe and it intensified Cold War tensions. "U.S. officials invited the Soviets to participate but insisted on certain restrictions that would virtually guarantee Stalin’s refusal. When Stalin refused, ordering Soviet client states to do so as well, the onus of dividing Europe appeared to fall on the Soviet leader and deprived his threadbare partners of assistance they sorely needed"

(pg. 736).

1949

Soviet Union Detonates an Atomic Bomb

Details

On August 29, 1949 the Soviet Union detonates their first atomic bomb. This event is significant to the Cold War because this now made the United States realize that the Soviets had the same power. Atomic developments played a huge role in the Cold War, if the U.S. wanted to send a bomb so could the Soviets.

Start of Korean War

1950

The Korean War started in June of 1950 and lasted until July of 1953. North Korea and South Korea were both involved in this war. After the war had ended North Korea was allied with the Soviet Union and South Korea signed a mutual defense treaty with America. "It had been the first major proxy battle of the Cold War" (pg.741).

Dwight D. Eisenhower Elected President

1952

In 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected president. Eisenhower had an administration that focused on the Cold War during his presidency. He did things that contributed to the Cold War like save money, developed a stockpile of nuclear weapons, continued New Deal programs, and more. These were all very helpful and important to the Cold War.

1956

The Suez Canal Crisis took place in 1952, starting with Egypt taking control of the Suez Canal in the Middle East. This led to a military attack from France, Israel, and Great Britain. Eisenhower urged France and Britain to pull back because he though that Egypt would turn to the Soviets for help. Eisenhower had just avoided a bigger war.

Kennedy Orders "Green Berets" to Vietnam

1961

In May of 1961, John F. Kennedy ordered the first contingent of Special Forces ("Green Berets") to Vietnam. Kennedy decided to increase military aid for the South Vietnamese he also decided that the "Green Berets" would train the South Vietnamese army in "unconvetional, small-group warfare tactics" (pg. 757).

The Nuclear Test Ban was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union on August 5, 1963. This treaty was important because it banned testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, this was a step in the right direction of controlling nuclear weapons.
