Gap Theory

Emma Singh, Amelia Armao, Katie Armstrong

What is the Gap Theory

What

The Gap Theory is the belief that between Genesis verses one and two, the world already existed and was destroyed by "Satan's Flood" and God re-created it in the six days described in Genesis.

Biblical Evidence

Biblical Evidence

The only verses that could possibly support this theory would be Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 because of the very specific wording.

How this theory can affect someone's belief of evolution and creation:

How

If someone believes that the earth is millions of years old then they might believe in this theory of creation instead of evolution because it fits their viewpoint that the earth is old.

Counter-arguments against Gap Theory:

Counter-arguments

The gap theory is contradicted by the Bible itself on a number of counts, and the Bible clearly teaches that death is the consequence of sin which came after the creation but this theory puts death before sin.

2 Peter 3:5

"But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water."

This verse clearly states that the earth was formed out of water and by water. No reference is made to land preceding that, which is what the Gap Theory proposes.

Exodus 20:11

"For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

This verse stated that the heavens, the earth, the seas, and all that is in them were created in six days. The Gap Theory says that the earth was made before the 6 days and it was recreated in the 6 days in Genesis.

Genesis 1:31

"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day."

When God created the world, He examined it and declared that it was good. This means that there was no evil in it at that time. The first mention of evil is in chapter 3, where Satan, in the form of a serpent, tempted Eve to sin. Therefore, sometime between Genesis chapter one and three, there must have been a rebellion in the angelic world, with many angels turning against God and becoming evil.

Our Opinion

Our Opinions

We agree that...

We Agree

it does not make sense that God decided to start out with a formless and empty body of water.

We disagree that..

We Disagree

God created the earth before the 6 creation days and that death and war happened in between verses 1 and 2. We disagree on these points because of the lack of biblical support for this theory.
