India is the birthplace of the so-called Dharmic religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. At present, Hinduism and Buddhism are, respectively, the fourth and the second most practiced religion in the world, having between them nearly 2400 million followers all over the planet.

The economy of the country is diversified; There are from traditional agricultural activities in small towns and crafts, to a great diversity of modern industries and services. Just over half of the workforce works in agriculture, but the service sector is the most important part of the country's economy, and is responsible for half of the national GDP, occupying 1/3 of the labor force.

The caste system of India describes the stratification and social restrictions in the Indian subcontinent, as well as defining the social classes by thousands of hereditary inbred groups, which are often referred to as jatis or castes.

The current political organization of India is based on the union of 28 States and Seven Territories, through a federal system. Constitutionally it is defined as a "socialist and secular democratic republic", with a parliamentary system of government.
