Theme timeline!

Assignment

A theme timeline explains how one or more themes are developed over the course of a text.

You are going to trace the development of both identity and family in your prezi.

You MUST HAVE at least three instances of identity and three instances of family in your prezi. You must also explain how each theme is developed (at the end) AND how they relate to each other (also at the end)

Secrecy 1

Victor creates his monster in a laboratory away from his friends and family. His refusal to let people in is introduced here.

Secrecy 1

Monstrosity 1

When the monster awakens, his yellow eyes and general appearance scare Victor into running away. The idea of monstrosity is introduced with the physical description of the monster and Victor's reaction to it.

Secrecy 2

In spite of knowing who really killed his little brother William, Victor keeps his monster a secret. Victor's selfishness and secrecy will continue to cause many tragedies.

Monstrosity 2

Despite the monster's attempts to fit in, he is constantly pushed away from human society. This is especially heart-breaking when the monster tries to talk to deLacey and the son comes in and freaks out.

Secrecy 3

Victor does not tell anyone about the monster until it is way too late. This secrecy and unwillingness to help the monster, leads to the monster killing Elizabeth.

Monstrosity 3

Monstrosity 3

The monster tells Walton that he is done with humanity and sets both his body and Victor's corpse on fire. The monster has accepted his inhumanity and decides to leave the world of men behind.

Connection

The thematic ideas of secrecy and monstrosity are intertwined in Frankenstein. Because Victor maintains his secret throughout the book, his creation is left alone in the world and without any sort of guidance. This lack of guidance led to the formation of a monster. Victor's creature looked like a monster and was treated like one. This also led to his monstrosity in nature as well. Had Victor owned up to his actions and let go of his secrecy, this idea of monstrosity may have turned out very differently.

Theme development

Secrecy

Secrecy

The thematic idea of secrecy is developed into the theme that secrecy and isolation can lead to tragedy. Had Victor confided in his family or friends, perhaps the deaths of many could have been avoided. Victor created his monster in secret and did not give the monster any sort of chance to be accepted by society. This is because the monster was never introduced or explained by Victor; he was just a scary phantom.

Monstrosity

Monstrosity

The thematic idea of monstrosity is developed into the theme that, without friendship and humanity a person is likely to become monstrous. This is evidence when the monster's physical appearance repels humanity and this continual rejection turns the innocent creature into a murderous monster who eventually rejects humanity.
