Different Types of Courage

By Rishika and Kartikay

What is Physical Courage?

Physical

Courage

Physical courage is the type most people think of first, the one that allows us to risk discomfort, injury, pain or even death.

Examples

Story

Compassion tutors Noemi and Lili were faced with an unthinkable disaster in Piura, Peru when torrential rains consumed their community and flooded their streets with rivers. The brave tutors helped the families to the safety of their homes’ roofs. And it was there that they spent 12 hours waiting for the waters to recede and hoping for rescue.

Back on drier land, Adrian was doing everything he could to get to the families and the tutors. He and three men from a neighbor church built a makeshift raft to rescue them and other people from the rooftops.

Courage for ones's Kindred

Courage

for one's Kindred

Courage for one's kindred is the courage that a person has to help or save his family and friends. Like helping a friend who is being bullied or saving your sibling from a dangerous animal.

In July 2014, a tiger entered 16-year-old Arjun Singh’s house in Uttarakhand. He showed extreme courage and fought it off, saving his mother’s life who had fainted as soon as the tiger entered. He went into a room and picked up a sickle to fight the tiger. As it was too small to hit from a distance, he grabbed a stick and waved it towards the tiger. He did not stop until the villagers reached there and the animal ran away on seeing the crowd. Arjun received the Sanjay Chopra award.

Story

Moral Courage

Moral courage is the courage to take action for moral reasons despite the risk of adverse consequences. Courage is required to take action when one has doubts or fears about the consequences. Moral courage therefore involves deliberation or careful thought.

MORAL Courage

Because of a superstition in Ghana, this sweet 8-year-old girl was never allowed outside. In her village, the tenth child in a family was believed to be cursed and had to be kept inside to be safe.

But the local church knew they had to get help to Sabina so she could go to school, make friends and have a normal life. Together with her father, they acted bravely to defy a tradition that would supposedly bring death.
