About 150km northwest of Hanoi, Vu Linh is a rural commune on the eastern shores of Thac Ba Lake, one of the largest artificially created lakes in Vietnam. Formed by the flooding of the Chay River for hydroelectricity projects, Thac Ba Lake is roughly 80km long and 10km wide. Its clear, placid waters spread out in tentacles, peppered with hundreds of hilly, forested islets. The tiny, lakeside commune of Vu Linh has several excellent homestays, most of which consist of picturesque, palm-thatched wooden houses on stilts above the water and crop fields.

Gam River is not only associated with the source of life of the indigenous people of the Northeast, the waterway connecting the four provinces of Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan, but it also contains its own hidden beauty.
During the length of 217 km flowing into the territory of Vietnam, the Gam river bend, drifting down the bow, between the towering mountain range formed by quartz schist, sandstone and limestone through the process of mobilization, tectonics makes beautiful scenery.

Ba Be Lake is the largest natural lake in Vietnam spanning over 500ha. It is located in Nam Mau Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan Province in the Northeast region of the country. It is also the highest, sitting at 150 meters above sea level. The vast lake is surrounded by impressive karst peaks that make up the Pia Booc mountain range and thick, evergreen forests.
This is the perfect place for any keen adventurer. Here you can trek through the thick jungle, explore mystical caves, kayak down the rivers, and swim in the lakes. The incredible range of terrain will keep you on your toes and keep your excitement piqued.
The national park itself was only established in 1992, making it feel as if you are exploring unchartered areas. Many caves have only been discovered recently and are providing new information about the geography and biodiversity of the area.
Ba Be Lake
One of the best ways to get a feel for the area on arrival is by boat on one of the three lakes - kayaks for the more adventurous or guided motor boat tours for those who want to relax a little. Ba Be National Park has featured in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, forums and blogs, but nothing can prepare you for experiencing its intoxicating landscapes and clear waters first hand. The lakes have a lot to offer, including waterfalls, rivers, valleys, lakes, and caves all set amidst picturesque landscapes.
Ba Be is considered by both native Vietnamese and visitors to be one of the best trekking areas in the country. The whole district is dominated by the Pia Booc mountain range rising to a height of 1527m. It is the combination of the scenery, from the karst outcrops clad in rich vegetation to the paddy fields carpeting the lower slopes of the Na Nghe mountains; the rich variety of flora and fauna; and the rich cultural diversity which together make this a unique and rewarding location. Local guides are a wealth of invaluable knowledge; as well as keeping you safe, they know the which routes to take for the best sightseeing and wildlife spotting.

The lake itself is actually three small lakes joined together – Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng. The area was established as a national preserved forest and tourist centre in 1978, before being established as Vietnam's eighth national park in 1992. It was recently recognised by UNESCO as the third Ramsar site in Vietnam - an important wetland of the world. Located 145m above sea level, the lake has an average depth of 20-25m and its deepest part is 35m.
Ba Be is great for exploring by bicycle. The main roads around the national park are mostly in good condition and don't see much traffic. One day cycling around the park should enable you to visit Hua Ma Cave, Thac Bac Waterfall and some villages.

Ba Be's food specialities are another reason to relish your stay in the area. There are too many to mention but boiled chayote cooked with sesame or "lon cap nach" (literally pig carried under the arm) which are home pigs raised in the field or forest. Barbequed meat and fish and a huge variety of vegetables, together with dumplings, bamboo tube rice, noodles and eggs may all be part of the feast you can enjoy at the table of your host.
Ba Be Lake is definitely a place to remember, well worth the effort of the journey. It is breathtakingly beautiful, serene, culturally fascinating, whilst also offering a range of adventure activities.

The peace found in Ba Be
The frame of house consists of 36 columns and 72 beams, each of which is made from a single tree, with a palm roof at the top. The use of top quality natural materials leads to a home that complements the beautiful natural environment. In a traditional style, the house is built on stilts, with an upstairs sleeping area and a dining area downstairs.
Normally, Tay has a large, sleeping area, however, Linh understands that this may not be suitable for everyone's tastes. In homestay, sleeping areas have been separated to provide some privacy. All rooms are designed with comfort and beauty in mind to reflect the beautiful scenery. Each room has a lovely comfortable bed, elegant bamboo furniture, air conditioning and, of course, a mosquito net to avoid any unwanted visitors!
Traditional Western-style homestay decorations, along with his favorite photos and artworks, he managed to give people insight into Vietnam's rich culture and history.
