빌 게이츠와 폴 앨런이 1975년에 공동창업한 다국적 기업이다.
다국적 기업이란?
세계 각지에 자회사·지사·합병회사·공장 등을 확보하고, 생산·판매활동을 국제적 규모로 수행하는 기업.

1976년 만우절에 설립한 미국의 하드웨어 설계/IT/콘텐츠 기업.
매킨토시에서 부터 시작한 OS Mac OS를 발전시키며 현재의 macOS까지 도달하게 되었다.

당시 헬싱키 공대 대학생이었던 리누스 토르발즈가 만든 운영체제이다.
