The Famous 1910 Rogers Pass Avalanche

Climate in Canada:

- Winters were extremely cold, and summers were extremely hot

- Used to be around -25 degrees

- Coldest temperature in Canada ever recorded was in 1947 with the temperature of -62.8 Celsius

- Before global warming, Canada used to have all 4 full seasons

- A massive snow avalanche which killed 62 men

- It happened when a crew of men were clearing a railroad line

- The railroad line was outside of Revelstoke in Rogers Pass through the Selkirk Mountains in BC

- It is Canada’s worst avalanche disaster

Outcomes

- Around 400 meters of track were buried.

- Wooden cars behind the locomotive were crushed and all but one of the workmen were instantly buried in the deep snow

- The men did a great job of trying to clean the snow

What caused it?

- the beginning of the day was cold (-20 C)

- air temperature at the pass had soared to above freezing

- The large body of snow was above a railroad line

- Due to the vibrations of trains, the snow began falling

- It became larger as it picked up snow from the mountain

Rogers Pass

- the Rogers Pass was completed in November 1885

- consisted of snow-sheds to prevent snow avalanches

- There were vulnerable areas near the track which couldn't be protected.

Its affects on Canada and the people

- Canada struggled economically and financially after the avalanche ; many establihsments were greatly damaged, and Canada had to pay a great deal of money to recover

- 62 People died

- Many people lost their homes, animals, crops, etc

- Many people got sick, and/ or were left disabled

- Many suffocated under the snow, and many were left disabled

- Their homes were tarnished, leaving them homeless and unprotected from the cold
