Fun Facts!

While the main economy is supported by tourism and many growing tech businesses, Costa Rica remains largely agricultural.

Many farms grow things like coffee, cacao, pineapple, and bananas.

Much like Oregon and New Jersey, Costa Rica still employs people to pump gas.

When driving your rental car, you’ll have to sit tight at the gas station while an attendant fills your tank for you.

If you are lucky, they may also clean your windshields, free of charge!

Modern Costa Rica History

01

Costa Rica has been inhabited as far back as 5000 year BC

  • Costa Rica notified the United States of its independence on September 5, 1848. On April 24, 1849, Ephraim G. Squier, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Guatemala, was given full powers to negotiate commercial and other matters with Costa Rica. This latter date constituted recognition by the United States. Squier never transmitted his letter of credence or visited Costa Rica, and was unable to reach any agreements by correspondence with Costa Rica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Costa Rica History

  • The so-called revolution—in reality a civil war—of 1948 marked the entry of Costa Rica into the modern era. It caused a temporary hiccup in the tranquil march of democratic elections and was only the second such break in a 20th century that saw turbulence worldwide.

U.S- Costa Rica

  • Costa Rica was originally part of the United Provinces of Central America, which had separated from Mexico in 1823

Costa Rica has been inhabited as far back as 5000 years BC by indigenous people. There were many migrations and influences from the Aztecs of Mexico to the Mayas and the Incas of Peru. The native population was small compared to the vast Pre-Columbian civilizations found throughout Latin America.

  • The United States established diplomatic relations with Costa Rica in 1851, following Costa Rica’s independence from Spain and the later dissolution of a federation of Central American states. A strong democracy of more than five million people with deep ties to the United States, Costa Rica is an important, committed partner on key U.S. priorities in the region, including security, democracy and human rights, governance, economic prosperity, climate change, and addressing root causes of irregular migration and migration management.

Economy

Costa Rica’s agricultural land and climate are its most important natural resources. The country has few mineral resources. The most important are the yet-unexploited bauxite deposits in the General and Coto Brus valleys and copper in the Cordillera de Talamanca.

  • Costa Rica's high susceptibility to external shocks, such as global inflationary pressures, dampened global growth, and tightening financial conditions, could pose challenges. Climate vulnerabilities, exacerbated by phenomena like El Niño, compound these uncertainties and could disproportionately impact the poor. Additionally, recent surges in migration and perceived criminality could increase expenditure demands, potentially impeding the pace of fiscal consolidation.
  • An era of peaceful democracy in Costa Rica began in 1899 with elections considered the first truly free and honest ones in the country's history.
