Timeline of Recreational History

Introduction

Intro

This presentation will take you on a journey through the ancient times. You will soon understand what life was like 6000 years ago, and what people would do during their recreational time.

This timeline will include information about how recreational time was spent between 400oBC right through to today.

4000- 2350BC

Ancient Egypt

Proof of this recreation is only through depictions and ancient artifacts. Recreation during the Ancient Egypt period included fishing, hunting, sport, and just realxing. These things are quite a commmon way to spend recreational time, and especially in this time period.

As much as fishing was a job for some, it was also a pastime activity for others. The evidence that has been found in accordance to this shows that the Egyptians were the first to use fishing as a pleasure thing.

Ancient Egyptians enjoyed their sport, and many athletic events and team sports have descended from this time. The played a sport very similar to hockey, Archery was also a very common sport to play. The Nile was perfect calm waters for swimming, which was also a very popular pastime activity. People in the wealthier classes would build pools for their princes to learn and practise the sport.

Ancient Babylon

During these times, people would think they didn't have time off but they actually got 12 days off every month to spend their time doing whatever they choose.

The most common and recognized recreation was based around the ancient kings and their enjoyement with hunting animals. They prefer to hunt the larger animals, as it is a way for the kings to prove their strength and that their kingly powers are true.

Boxing and wrestling were two popular sports played, as was a form of polo where the men would sit on one another's shoulders rather then horseback.

Playig boardgames was something everyone participated in at some point, whether they were rich or poor.

Children played with smaller versions of the weapons being used at the time, like slingshots and boomerangs. They also enjoyed role playing with one another.

There were many different pastime activities during this time period, and it brought people together.

Ancient Athens

The list of different recreational activities available during this time period is huge. There was such a wide range of choices, and there was something for everyone to do.

Some of the most common ones included, hunting, fishing, aquatic sports. There was also other games,toys and fun activities for the children, such as acrobatics, yo-yo's, knuckle bones and dice. The children would usually make games out of the very little equipment they had, and entertain themselves for long periods of time.

Ancient Rome

During this time, the most common recreational activity done by men, was around being a gladiator. Gladiators are professional fighters who fight against each other, wild animals, and slaves. Sometimes they would beat them to death, for the entertainment of people watching.

Men would also participate in a range of different track and field evens such as foot races, archery, wrestling or boxing.

Ball playing was extremely popular in rome, this was often how they would spend their morning excersises. They played a range of different sports, like soccer, handball and field hockey.

Middle Ages

1100-1500AD

In the Middle Ages, there was so many different types of activities people would do during their recreational time. These activities ranged from Hunting, Jousting, Wrestling, Gambling, and Riddle Making.

Hunting was seen as a huge privilege during these times, as it was a time for the Knights to practice their skills of warfare. Peasants were used to hunt the smaller animals for their own survival.

Wrestling was a form of entertainment for the lords and monarchs.

Jousting was one of the most popular events participated in, it was practiced in every empire. Knights took this as a chance to practice their skills and use of weaponry.

Rennaisance

During this time, there was two very different types of recreational choices, due to different classes. The peasants were not left with much time to enjoy themselves but when they got the chance they made the most of it. The most popular choices of recreation for the peasants were going to church, weddings, visiting the markets, fairs, and sometimes playing sports.

The more wealthy people got a lot more time to spend doing these type of activities, plus many more. They would spend their days playing games like tennis, lawn bowls, archery, billiards, wrestling, and card games. As they had so much more spare time they also got the chance to attend shows at theatres, and attending concerts.

Industrial Revolution

1700-1900

Throughout the Industrial Revolution, there was becoming more and more time for people to spend doing what they choose. This was because many working jobs switched from being done manually, to automatic machinery.

The pastime activities included, Horse racing, cricket, soccer, music halls, theatre and opra.

Music halls were a place where everyone was welcome, to source some forms of entertainment. Sport was a pastime activity that evolved more and more throughout time, as wealthy communities were placing more football grounds and more people began playing.

The theatre was a place the wealthier people within the community would go for entertainment.

The Great Depression

World War 1

World War 2

1914-1946

During these times, specifically, recreation became such a vital part of everyone's life as it made them happy for a period of time. It was fun, duirng a time where there was no fun to be found.

During The Great Depression, many people would listen to the radio, watch movies, or sometimes play sports. The 1930s were considered the 'Golden Age of Radio' as so many families had owned a radio and listened to it frequently. Radios were a way for families to listen to their favourite shows and movies, as well as hear any daily news.

These activities were also participated in during the World Wars, although during WW2 sport was highly damaged. All sports were suspended and football grounds were closed, not to reopen until the following September.

Women's Rights

1946-1990

As WW2 came to an end, men were returning home, which also meant women were returning to their prior lives. While the men were away, women were taking up sports to entertain communities, but once the men returned they immediatly took this role back. As time went on rights were being changed, and women were soon allowed to play sport again. Sport quickly became the most participated in activity during ones recreational time, as men and women were both allowed to play.

As well as sport and being active, during the 1990s technology became more used in lives, and began to become ones way of spending their recreational times.

Today's Recreation

Today

Recreation of today has evolved quite hugely since the very beginning, and we have so many more choices to make. Not only do we have these extra choices, we also have so much more time to spend doing these things.

Some of the activities that we choose to do nowadays range from many different sports, videogames, using technology and many other things. We are doing more things as families, and gaining bonds with our parents through this.

Sport has become such a major part of many people's lives now, and it is becoming a huge part of how we are spending our spare time. There are so many different sports to choose for, so there is one for everyone.
