Black Dots - Civilizations which held Coffee
As coffee spread from Ethiopia to Yemen, it was used only as a cultural item of value until a Yemen monastary learned to make what we know today as Black Coffee, the drink. As word spread, trade began between old world countries, Europe traded with Ethiopia and Yemen, resulting in much coffee being brought to Europe. It first arrived in Venice in 1615 and soon spread to bigger parts of Europe such as England in 1637, Italy in 1645, and London later in 1652.
Coffee was very profitable as ethiopian farmers were able to enjoy growing few beans on their land, and many merchants would buy them directly from the farmers. As time went on coffee start to be spread out it became popular. This meant that the demand for coffee would increase. As demand increased, farmers in Yemen began planting and harvesting coffee beans, their more suitable environment allowed more harvesting. This gave Yemen the most profit when it came to trading Coffee.
Surprisingly enough, the growing and need for coffee did not impact the labor practices in these years. Coffee grounds were easy to harvest in bulk and even easier to trade through caravans. No slave or unpaid labor was used to harvest coffee until the early 1800's in Italy.
