He is best known for his heroic paintings of African-Americans including these two:
The official presidential portrait of Barack Obama
Wiley is working to correct the racial imbalances in American culture. His most famous paintings "quote historical sources and position young black men within that field of power." By choosing people of color as the subjects of his heroic portraiture, he has made more people feel welcome in art institutions. His exhibitions attract visitors who wouldn't normally visit art museums and galleries.

Ingres' Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte
Wiley found a crumpled mug shot on the street. A mugshot is a photo taken by the police when a person has been arrested. This one inspired Wiley to experiment with creating paintings based on mug shots. It made him wonder: Is portraiture ever able to communicate anything deeper than the way a person looks?
Kehinde Wiley lives & works today in his studio in Brooklyn, New York.
He also has studios in China and Senegal.
Wiley was born here in Los Angeles. His mother enrolled him in after-school art classes.

Kehinde Wiley said that the most important lesson he learned in art school was to create art that he wanted to make, not art that his professors wanted him to make. So, be brave my students! Pursue what interests you!
