Household Poison: used as a pesticide for rats, gophers, mice, etc.

  • also used for verterbrates (birds)

Prevention

  • Poison is released outdoors: try to avoid it. Move away from the poisoned area

  • Poison is released indoors: evacuate the building immediately or "shelter in place"

  • If you come into close contact with it, remove clothing and dispose of it. Then wash skin with a lot of soap and water to protect yourself from any chemical

Detection

  • Diagnosis is usually based off of exposure and clinical signs

  • Discovered in body fluids and tissue with instrumental methods used in hospitals to detect a diagnosis of chemical poisoning

  • For animals, symptoms can occur after 10-20 minutes after ingestion
  • Dogs, cattle, horses, and pigs: 0.5-1mg/kg
  • Cats: 2mg/kg
  • Grain-laced or pelleted commercial baits usually contain >0.5% in it
  • Humans: traces of in the blood range from 1-30 mg/L

Symptoms of strychnine poisoning appear within 15-60 minutes of contact. These include:

  • diffulty breathing
  • painful muscle spasms
  • jaw tightness
  • dark urine
  • uncontrollable arching of the neck and back

  • Back in the day, was available in pill form and used to treat many illnesses in humans
