Connective Tissue - Catherine Joe

Dense irregular connective tissue

White fibrous connective tissue

Functions to: supporting and protecting the surrounding structures

Function to: allows the tissue to sustain tension exerted from many different directions

Yellow elastic connective tissue

Functions to: withstand pulling forces and often binds body parts together, as parts of tendons and ligaments.

Functions to: enables organs and parts of organs to stretch

Found in skin, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bones

Dense regular connective tissue

Found in ligaments and tendons (connections between bones)

Found in lung tissue, elastic arteries, and trachea

Found in the dermis, the inner skin layer

Fibrous Cartilage

Hyaline Cartilage

Elastic Cartilage

White Blood cells V.S. Red Blood cells

Functions to: Red blood cells transport gases; white blood cells fight infection; and platelets are involved in blood clotting

Functions to: cushions bones in the knees and in the pelvis girdle and helps fill in the torn part of the cartilage

Functions to: more flexible than hyline cartilage because of extracellular matrix that contains many elastic fibers and provides the framework for the external ears and parts of the larynx

Specialised connective tissue

Functions to: support and flexibility to different parts of the body and helps hold the body together

Red blood cells are found in blood

White blood cells are Found in the blood and lymph tissue

Bone

Looks like:

Cartilage

Functions to: contains abundant collagenous fibers, which are flexible and reinforce the mineral components of bone. And bone internally supports body structures and protects vital structures in the cranial and thoracic cavities

Found in the pubic symphysis and the annulus fibrous of intervertebral discs

Found in the epiglottis and the pinnae

Blood

Spongy bone is found in the end (or epiphysis) of a long bone

Compact bone is found in the shaft of a long bone and the surface of the flat bones.

Elastic cartilage

Hyaline cartilage

Fibrous Cartilage

Found on the ends of bones in many joints, in the soft part of the nose, and in the supporting rings of the respiratory passages

Bone

Reticular tissue

Functions to: Level of consciousness and alertness, sleep/arousal cycle

Dense

Connective

Looks like:

(Loose)

Found around the kidney, liver, the spleen, and lymph nodes.

Found in:

Dermis and subcutaneous layers of the skin, organs, blood vessels

Areolar tissue

Loose

Functions to: Bind skin to internal organs

Looks like:

Adipose Tissue

Functions to insulate, retain body hear, provide protection and padding for internal organs

Found in under skin, surrounding organs, yellow bone marrow, breast tissue
