WHAT IS CULTURE SHOCK?

Culture Shock

  • Kalervo Oberg
  • Feelings of disorientation, surprise, confusion and uncertainty experienced by those arriving to live in a new, unfamiliar culture (Oberg,1954)

Factors

1. Language differences

2. New expectations around manners and customs

3. Different values, morals, dress codes, beliefs and ideals

4. Different rules and procedures in social institutions, such as schools, government bureaucracies, hospitals, charges, the justice system

3 PHASES

Three Phases

Shock Phase

Honeymoon Period

  • excitement, optimism and euphoria upon arrival in the new culture, combined with the expectations of unlimited opportunities.
  • realize the foreignness of the new culture. It is characterized by stress, irritability, inability to sleep, a focus on the negative aspects of everyday life.

Adaptation

  • compromise between the unrealistic expectations of the honeymoon phase and the disappointment and dissatisfaction with the reality during the second phase.

Reverse Culture Shock

  • shock experienced when one returns to his or her native culture after being abroad (Oberg, 1954)

Symptoms

Reverse Culture Shock

  • Feels strain
  • Sense of loss and feelings of deprivation
  • Feel rejected by their family and friends
  • Feel anxious and disillusioned after losing his or her lifestyle

Ira's Experiences

MOMENTS IN VISAYAS

  • Capacity of utmost 10 people.
  • Innovative and creative design

Transportation

Food

  • No need for the existence of a special occasion for them to eat this.
  • Cheaper here compared to other places.

Language

  • They love and preserve their language so much.
  • Most of them, especially the elders, do not know how to speak in Filipino, or even make an effort on learning it.
  • One time, when we were about to go home from school, my classmates, altogether, shouted 'Halong Ai!!' and I thought they were just saying 'Hello!' so I waved and even said 'Hi!'
  • Halong! = Ingat!

Manners

  • They weren't taught of the importance of using 'po' and 'opo'.
  • They casually talk to their superiors.

Manners

Gian's Experiences

CULTURE SHOCK EXPERIENCE DURING VACATION

TRANSPORTATION

- It could carry around 4-6 passengers

FOOD

CROCODILE SISIG

-Instead of pork, crocodile's meat is used

Kassandra's Experiences

DIFFERENT CULTURE SHOCK MOMENTS

Language

Iloilo Camp

It was the National Science Camp that was held back in 2015 in Iloilo. When I heard the word "niyot" and "maniniyot", I think I misheard it for an Ilocano term that is offensive. Then someone told me that "niyot" means "picture" and "maniniyot" means "photographer".

Sopas with tomato

-The typical "Filipino Sopas" we know it has shredded chicken breast, chopped carrots and celery, sliced cabbage and macaroni pasta.

-When the mom from our neighbor gave us a bowl of the "Sopas", I was shocked because it has hotdog which can be an ingredient but we do not usually use it, and it has tomatoes.

Food

Kpop culture

Kpop

-Back in summer 2019, I was not interested in Kpop in general so I was clueless of how live concerts are done..

-I was shocked on the way they dance and sing live, because they were so stable.

-The fans are really loud, everytime another song was performed they would scream and sing along.

Railey's Experiences

My experience in Singapore

  • Changi Airport

RULES

  • I looked around and it was cleaner than the one we have in the Philippines and more accommodating.
  • It was strict, if someone says “no” what they mean is “NO!”
  • Another moment was when we were told that chewing gum is illegal.

LABOR

  • In Singapore, people can still work despite their old age.

  • As they grow older, their job options become limited.

FOOD

  • Cafeterias always have a Halal and Non-Halal tray station.
  • White = Halal
  • Grey or Other colors except white = Non-Halal
  • This is where you put back the trays where you ate from, together with the color coded plates.

Don't judge too quickly

THANK YOU!
