In the late 1800s the working conditions in factories and warehouse were awful. Workers were forced to work in bad conditions for 12 hrs straighten or sometimes even longer. The companies they worked for were not entitle to give retirement benefits so there were elderly people working until they died off just to have money to pay for essential needs.
In response to the problem of poor working conditions and the apparent indifference of industrial barons, membership in the American Federation of Labor (AFL), a union for skilled workers formed in 1886. This union grew tremendously through 7 years. Finally in 1907 there were laws made for child labor and the workforce overall.
