What is our organism?

  • Glofish, they get their name from their fluorescent coloration.
  • They come in a variety of fluorescent colors called Starfire Red, Electric Green, Sunburst Orange, Cosmic Blue, Galactic Purple, and Moonrise Pink.

What are transgenic organisms/crops?

Is an artificially made DNA strand that is formed by the combination of two or more gene sequences.

A modified organism where genes are transferred from one organism to another through genetic engineering techniques

The Creation of GloFish

  • GloFish, named for their fluorescent coloration, were developed by inserting fluorescent genes from jellyfish and sea anemones into the eggs of silver and black zebra danio fish.

  • Alan Blake and Richard Crockett created the glofish, while also founding the company Glofish in 2001.

What is Gene Therapy?

The Usefulness of GloFish

Gene therapy is a technique that modifies a person’s genes to treat or cure disease.

GloFish, although entertaining, is not beneficial due to the potential ecological risks associated with their fluorescent properties.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Genetic Engineering and GloFish

Genetic engineering, or genetic modification, manipulates an organism's DNA in a lab setting.

GloFish serves as a valuable tool for environmental and biomedical research due to their fluorescent proteins. Some of the disadvantages include: reduced rate of fertility, cannot survive in open waterways, and cannot be eaten by humans
