Should PEDs be legalized in sports?

By: Luciano Fiorello

Performance enhancing drugs

What are PEDs?

PEDs are also known as performance enhaning drugs. These drugs are used by not only athletes but also normal people. There are many different types of PEDs, for example anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. What these PEDs do is build strength and muscle at a very rapid rate, they also can help humans recover from injuries quicker.

entertainment

If PEDs were legalized, they could help professional sports become more entertaining. we could watch these already superhuman athletes do even more incredible things. Games and matches would be much more fun to watch. These athletes would be doing things no humans have ever seen or done before. Imagine watching athletes like Aarron Judge or Odell Beckham on PEDs.

“sports would be at a higher level. A huge part of watching sports is witnessing the very peak of human athletic ability, and legalizing performance enhancing drugs would help athletes climb even higher” (Smith 1).

Benefits of PEDs in sports

Economics

If PEDs became legalized there would most definitely be an economic impact. More money would be made throughout sports. If star players stay healthy and stay on the field teams will sell more tickets. Alsothe more a players image grows the more deals and sponsorship will happen. Also, the more money a team has the more they can spend on marketing.

No Cheating

No cheating

If PEDs were legalized there would be no more cheating. There would be no reason fo drug tests or suspensions on players. There would be no more controversy and players would no longer have to try and get away with PEDs. When players are caught doping it brings negative attention to that particular league which is not good for the sport.

As reported by “The Connect U.S Fund” they confirm that “Although competition is unfair if there is access to enhancements, leveling the playing field through deregulation instead of prohibition would create results that were more authentic” (Chief 1)

Physical affect

Why PEDs should be illegal

Many people don't know that PEDs attack the body in many different ways that could be life altering. Performance enhancing drugs are very dangerous to the body. People use PEDs to look stronger and be more athletic but they dont realize it affects their body in a negative way. Some side effects could be life threating.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse they state that “Steroid use has been associated with high blood pressure” and cardiovascular diseases like “heart attacks, artery damage, and strokes” (NIDA 7).

Younger generations

The Youth

PEDs could hurt our future ge neration because these kids will be exposed to PEDs at such a young age. Sports are looked at by many children and if sports leagues are using PEDs these players would become bad role models to the youth. These kids look up to these superior athletes all around the world, and if they saw their hero juicing or doping they would think it is cool.

According to “The Connect U.S Fund” they report, “Many student athletes, including those in youth sports, look up to professionals who play the same game or a similar position as a role model. These people are a significant influence on the life of the child” (Chief 1).

not fair to all

What about the athletes that aren't willing to take Performance enhancing drugs? These kinds of athletes won't be able to keep up with the athletes that are doping. athletes would slowly disappear from their sport. These athletes could have real and true talent but the sport they love is stripped from them.

“The Connect U.S Fund” believes that “Doping can set the stage for unfair play, putting athletes who aren’t taking drugs or hormones at a disadvantage”(chief 1).

Not fair to all

My Stance

claim :PEDS should not be legalized in professional sports because they are dangerous to the human body, hurt our younger generations, and would affect sports in a negative way.

PEDs have never had a place in sports and it should stay that way. These athletes are not robots and us fans should care about them.
