The San Fransisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is a suspension bridge and is made of concrete and steel. With a span of 1,263 feet and weighing in at 35,200 tons. The bridge is 57 feet wide, 23,556 feet long, and has a height of 525 feet.

The Basics

Where and When

Where and When

This bridge connects San Fransisco and Oakland and was built during 1936.

History

This Bridge was built to connect San-fransisco and Oakland during the Great Depression when someone couldn't afford something like a ferry. Charles Purcell directed the construction. It seemed impossible! The way they built it was by placing an ancorage on Yerba Buena Island. In a way, it was building two bridges.

Challenges

Challenges

The biggest challenge was the water level, forcing a more exspensive suspension bridge. In fact, this bridge holds the record for the deepest bridge pier in the world at 242 feet below sea level.

Time

Time

Now, the average time for a bridge to be built over water is 1 to 3 years. The San-Fransisco-Oakland bay bridge was built in about 3. Although that sems like a long time, it was 6 months ahead of scedule.

Traffic

Traffic

Appoximently 270,000 cars go across this bridge per day. Doing the math, I found out 98,550,000 cars go across the Bay Bridge per year.

Currently

Currently this bridge is facing no problems and seems normal carrying cars back and forth.

Fun Facts

Fun Facts

Did you know that while half way through consruction, it got the world record for longest cantilever bridge in history. A record that it still holds to this day! This bridge is known for being the most exspensive bridge ever built. It cost 77 million dollars to build back then. Although some bridges seem more expensive, that's not the case. Using a inflation calculator, today it would cost around 1.5 billion today
