Essentially the English bill of rights
turned the absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. The government was based on laws made by Parliament, not on the desires of ruler.
Because of the English Bill of Rights the people of England representatives in Parliament. The colonists did not.
Enlightenment thinkers:
T. Hobbs: He believed People are evil and selfish and evil,he believed that having an absolute monarchy was the best form of governing
J. Locke: believed people were born into the world with natural writes Life,Liberty,Property
Montesquieu: Believed the the government should be split into different powers, The Legislative,Executive, Judicial.
Rousseau: Believed the government is a "Social Contract". If the government violates that contract the people can elect a new government.
Voltaire: Believed the government should be separated from the church, for more tolerance of other religions.
The very "enlightened" ideas spread to the colonies and actually got people to think about the idea of independence and an different government.
The Great Awakening was a religious revival movement in the colonies. It really helped spread the idea of equality to the colonies. This also helped the colonies question authority.
The French and Indian war was the French with the indians versus the british. The war was fought over the fertile land along the Mississippi river. In this war the colonists were expected to fight in favor of the british. The colonists did not see this as their war, they thought of this as another european conflict. To win the king issued a blank check, and the british won. this left the british with a 60,000,000 pound debt. For this reason they began taxing the colonies.
