Colonialism in India

How did it start? And when?

In the beginning(1600's), Portugal started to lose control of the East Asian Spice Trade. So, The British East Indies started to send over their ships to the Spice Island so they could get a share of the trade. Therefore, the British East Indies company had the right to set up trading posts all along the coasts of India.

How did the colonization of India have a lasting impact?

Before the colonization of India, Indian hand loom was a popular market in Europe. Indian textiles such as cotton, linen, silk, and woolen goods already had markets. Indian markets then began to import machine made clothes from Britain and because of this import Britain's market became a huge threat to the Indian handicraft industries because British goods were available at a way cheaper price. A few years after this, India went from being an exporter of handmade clothes to being an exporter of raw materials (cotton) and an importer of British made clothes. This all caused the industry to collapse creating a very lasting impact.

How did it end?

How did

it end?

The tension from the rising trend of nationalism made running the empire very difficult both politically and economically. National leaders, like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhai Patel and many others fought for rights of the people. By 1920s the national movement had become very destructive, Mahatma Gandhi began several movements against the British. It was hoped that maybe the British would leave after the Second World War for good, But the British would not quit. After British did not leave Mahatma Gandhi began the "Quit India Movement" in

1942. The British finally saw that they had to leave India for good.

Summary of The British Colonization of India

The British rule of India has changed a lot about India to this dafe. The British started to

come to India at the beginning of the 1600's. At this time the British East Indie company was born. The East India Company increased its powers and started to govern the country. The British formed laws and policies of their own. Slowly but rapidly the entire Indian sub continent was under the British rule. By mid 1800's, the British introduced the railways, telegraph and postal service in India. The British made numerous acts that made India angry with dissatisfaction and resentment, which caused them then to revolt.

Each action was vigorously stopped by the British forces. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and many more arose and publicly convicted the British. They were the people's leaders who inspired the people of India not to be afraid of the forces. And finall India gained Independence back on August 15, 1947, after many lives were lost.
