The mortar and pestle is a unique culinary tool that has a peculiar shape and is composed of volcanic rock, which makes it uncommon. Despite having three supporting pilars, it has a bowl-like shape. What does this tool do? It is also regarded as a more antique or retro gadget. It grinds herbs and whatever else you want to put in your day to day meal for a extra savoury taste.

Since the primary influence on the environment is the volcanic eruption itself, I don't think that the making of molcajete has too many negative consequences on the ecosystem. To top it off, the molcajete is composed of volcanic rock, or basalt, which is a rather sturdy material and is known to last for millennia (stronger then platinum or iron.

Construction of the Mortar and Pestle?

In cultures where Spanish is spoken, the mortar and pestle is also referred to as the molcajete. The Kebaran culture was the first to utilize mortar and pestle in Southwest Asia in 35000 BC. Later, the Aztecs and Mayas began to use the mortar and pestle around 7000 and 5000 BCE.

• Molcajetes are hand made by a very skilled craftsmen.

• The fully body of the molcajete is made of volcanic rock. which is harvested near past volcanic erruptions.

• Once the piece of volcanic rock has been choosen, it is then crafted into a bowl with a tool called tejolote.

• Once shaped into a bowl, it is smothed out to create depth in the middle of the bowl.

• It is then sold in the market

Created by the quick collision of basaltic lava, which is similar to gabbro-nite magma and is exposed extremely near to the earth's surface, from the interior of the crust.

• Prior to the Kebaran, it was believed by the Mayas and Aztecs that the molcajete was reserved for royal burials in high society.

Molcajete Ingredients?

The pestle represents the club, while the mortar represents the basin. Although volcanic rock produces the most authentic mortar and pestle, you may also get them in porcelain, wood, or stone such as granite or marble.

The molcajete is sold in marketplaces, or plazas as they are more often known in Mexico, where merchants can set up shop and sell their items. A good molcajete will typically cost between $75 - $90. It can be used to crush herbs or, for a more traditional application, to make salsa.

• Because the Epipalaeolithic people generally lived in caves and low-lying lakes, their production of materials for daily cooking was limited, unlike the Mayas and Aztecs in the Kebaran culture, who saw the mortar and pestle like any other ordinary tool.

The main negative effects of manufacturing molcajete is the requirement to mine near most recent volcanic eruptions, which have negative effects on the land (floods, power outages, water contamination, and wildfires) and the air (volcanic gases like sulfur dioxide can cause global cooling while carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, has the potential to promote global warming). Mining for these unique rocks also destroys the environment (erosion) and those organisms that depend on the minerals of basalt.
