1865

1865 - 13th Amendment

The Amendment that abolished slavery, covering all individuals

1866

1866 - Civil Rights Act of 1866

First civil rights law declaring all persons born in the U.S. to be citizens, despite race or color.

1868

1868 - 14 Amendment

This Amendment indicates equal protection for all citizens and requires due process in state action

1871

1871 - Civil Rights Act of 1871

This act made it a crime to deny any citizen equal protection under the law by any meanss

1963

1963 - Equal Pay Act

Requires that men and women performing equal jobs receive equal pay

1964

1964 - Title VII of the Civil Rights Act

This Act would go on to forbid discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

1965 - Executive Order 11246

Requires affirmative action hiring women and minorities

1967

1967 - Age Discrimination in Employment Act

Prohibits discrimination in employment against individuals 40 year of age and older.

1973

1973 - Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Requires affirmative action in the employment of individuals with disabilities

1978

1978 - Pregnancy Discrimination Act

Treats discrimination based on pregnancy-related conditions as illegal sex discrimination

1990 - Americans with Disabilities Act

Prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities

1991

1991 - Civil Rights Act of 1991

Prohibits discrimination based upon race, color, and religion

1994

1994 - Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act

This Act requires rehiring of employees who are absent for military service, with training and accomodations as needed.

2008

2008 - Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

Prohibits discrimination because of genetic information

2009

2009 - Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Allows employees to claim discriminatory compensation within a set time after receiving a discriminatory paycheck
