Story Setting

Makes you think.

Makes you feel.

Setting

Where the story takes place.

Time period, place, fantasy or reality, race of beings...

Setting

Objectives

To be able to analyze why the when and where is important to the story.

To be able to analyze how the when and where adds to the story.

Objectives

Why

WHY

The setting is important because it sets a scene that adds to the conflict, or the problem the main character is trying to solve.

For example, if the character is trying to escape a Werewolf, the story would take place at night to make it more difficult since the darkness allows the Werewolf to hide.

How

The setting of a story creates an effect on the entire story. It could be creating suspense, irony, or humor, among many other affects.

For example, in the movie Jaws, the men hunting the shark are on a tiny, run-down boat which makes the audience worry about them being safe.

HOW

The Moonlight Man

meeting objectives

Objective 1: To be able to analyze why the when and where is important to the story.

It was important for this story to take place at night because darkness makes it more spooky and at nighttime it is easy for scary things to hide. It is also important that it takes place in a deserted parking lot because if there were people around she could have screamed for help.

Objective 2: To be able to analyze how the when and where is important to the story.

By having this movie take place at night the director creates a spooky mood to create the emotion of fear. The empty parking lot creates suspense because it leaves open the possibility that help may or may not come.

tone & mood

When considering how the setting has an effect on a story, we must also consider how it affects the story - meaning what emotions does it produce in readers or viewers.

This is where tone and mood come in.

tone & mood

tone

We learned that tone is the author's attitude toward the subject. The author will use the setting to show that attitude by creating a setting that reflects his or her tone.

Think about the reasons author Angie Thomas would have set "The Hate You Give" in a fictional version of Georgetown, Jackson, Mississippi. What tone does she hope to set?

mood

Practice

Analyze the setting of the following movie clip. Think about the director's decision to make it raining and stormy - how does that add to the tone/mood. Also look at the physical setting and think about why the director/writer would have set this scene in this physical setting.

Please write your response in your notebook after you've watched the clip.

We learned that mood is the feeling the author wants the reader to feel. The author uses the setting to help bring about those emotions.

Why does the director choose to have it raining in this scene? What emotions does it highten for the reader/viewer?
