Why do we need indirect questions?

  • a more polite way of asking a question

  • in formal writings /letters / situations
  • when we're talking /writing to people we don't know

Direct questions

What time is it?

  • question asked directly from a friend or a person you know well
  • question word order is used:

question word + (auxiliary) verb + subject + main verb

Indirect questions

Can you tell me what time it is?

  • the information is asked indirectly from a person you don't know (well) or you respect
  • 2 sentences in 1:
  • Can you tell me ...? - question word order
  • ... what time it is? - statement word order (subject + verb)

Part 1

  • Can you tell me ...?
  • Could you tell me ...?
  • Do you know ...?
  • Have you got any idea ...?
  • Would you mind telling me ...?
  • I was wondering ... .
  • I would like to know ... .
  • I also need to know ... .
  • Please tell me ... .
  • Please let me know ... .
  • Please inform me ... .
  • I should also like to ask ... .

Don't use question word order.

Steps:

  • Step 1: Identify the question type (WH question or Yes/no question).
  • Step 2: Identify the tense.
  • Step 3: Use statement word order.

  • direct question: in question word order
  • tense: Simple Past

Have you got any idea where I left my phone?

  • indirect question: the necessary information is in statement word order in Simple Past
  • the question word (where) is used to link the clauses

Indirect Yes/no questions

Yes/no questions

Do you provide meals to your workers?

  • direct question in question word order
  • tense: Simple Present

Could you give me any information if you provide meals to your workers?

  • indirect question the necessary information is in statement word order in Simple Present
  • to start your indirect question use if or whether (more formal)
