COMMERCIALIZATION

fame approaches like a bright light

Toilet paper was first introduced to the public as flat sheets in 1857 by Joseph Gayetty in the US. Toilet paper dispensed from rolls was popularized when the Scott Paper Company began marketing it in 1890.

not everyone had paper though...

In places that did not know of the toilet paper, wealthy people wiped themselves with wool, lace or hemp, while less wealthy people cleaned themselves with rags, wood shavings, leaves, hay, stones, sand, water, snow, fruit skins, seashells, or corncobs, or a sponge on a stick like the people of Ancient Greece did.
