Youth Courts

What is Youth Court?

Youth Court is a peer

diversion program that received initial authority to operate from the Jackson County Family Court. Cases in Youth Court are referred by local police departments. Juveniles that successfully complete, will have their record expunged at age 18.

Youth Court's Mission

Introduction

The goal is to hold juvenile offenders accountable for delinquent behaviors while providing positive sanctions to reduce involvement in crime.

Independence Youth Court Case Referrals

Independence

Independence Youth Court receives cases from the Independence Police Department and on certain occasions from the Jackson County Family Court. In 2023, IYC received 891 cases and adjudicated 761 juveniles.

Advanced Alcohol and Drug (AAD)– all cases involving alcohol or drugs

Anger Management/Anti-Bullying (AM)– all first-time offenders charged with cases of bullying, disorderly conduct or assault

Anger Management II and Decision Making (AM2)– all repeat offenders charged with assault, disorderly conduct or harassment, or any youth aged 15 or older charged with assault, disorderly conduct, or harassment

CPR/First Aid- Online class and exam

Empowerment/Arise (Emp)—Decision processes and life skills for juvenile offenders ages 11 to 14

Fire Prevention (FP)– all cases involving illegal burning or illegal use of fireworks

Life Skills (LS)-decision skills for ages 15 to 18

Safe Streets Crime Intervention (SS)– traffic violations or other serious offenses such as: false information, harassment, property damage, vandalism, resisting arrest, trespassing, minor weapons violations, etc.

Shoplifting (SH)– shoplifting/stealing cases

Tobacco/Vape Education (Tob)– all cases involving tobacco or vape possession/use

Truancy Program (TR)– school truancy cases
