Campus Out Reach

PETA Wants To Help Your School

PETA wants to help

  • People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is the largest animal rights organization in the world: 6.5 million members

PETA will help you create an Animal Rights Society at your school by:

  • Fund raising to help animals locally and nationally
  • Teaching students to speak out against injustice and participate in activism
  • Raising awareness of animal rights issues among students and faculty and in the community (PETA.org)

Sorting out the Basics

PETA tips:

PETA Guide

  • Contact your school activities office to become an officially recognized club

  • Pick a place and time to meet, and set a schedule.

  • Name your club. Students Against Animal Testing (SAAT) is a popular one.

Encouraging the movement

Once the info is out...

  • Table on campus where people can purchase affordable cruelty free products (there are over 2,016 Cruelty-Free Companies)

  • Section on campus where the society will have animals that are commonly tested on to represent pathos (emotional proof) to get others to join the movement

PR/Social Media

Social Media

The society will have a committee for social media coordinating such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media asking friends or other students to join, post meeting times, give aways, important announcements.

(P.S. Mention free stuff, and you’ve got yourself an animal rights army.)

(Lush products, completely CF)

PETA Contact is easy & accessible

What else can PETA do?

  • PETA has their email, phone number, and address posted publicly on their website

  • They even have an email just for students

PETA's Promise

PETA's Promise

According to PETA.org, "We will be there to help you every step of the way, and we’ll send you all the FREE materials that you’ll need."

They also offer FREE student group starter pack for ideas on getting the ball rolling.

Awareness is larger with numbers

Connecting with other orgs

  • Network with other animal testing prevention organizations

  • Committe within society who is responsible or other org out reach (sending emails, writing letters, making phone calls)

  • There are tens of thousands of animal rights activists and organizations around the world (speakingofresearch.com)

SAAT Across NC

Networking committe will also be responsible for connecting with other in state colleges/universities to encourage the society to be added to their school in order to become a state wide organization (CPCC, Queen's University, Wingate, UNC, UNCW, ECU, UNCG, Elon, etc....

Connect with other colleges

Alternatives to animal tests

According to the humanesociety.org,

There are 50 different alternative methods and testing strategies that have been developed and validated by regulatory authorities.

Are there alternatives?

Example) A combination of in vitro test methods and already available human data may be used to determine the potential for skin sensitization instead of using the traditional guinea pig and rabbit tests

Evidence

Alternatives to animal tests are often cheaper, quicker and more effective

Now that we know there are better alternatives....

lets get political

Political Outreach

  • California recently passed a bill which will make animal testing illegal effective as of 2020

First step: When a bill is introduced, it is referred to a committee. The bill is examined carefully and its chances for passage are first determined.

Final step: After both the House and Senate have approved a bill in identical form, it is sent to the president. If the president approves of the legislation, he signs it and it becomes law.

Next 5 years ...

  • Expanding the society to other colleges/unversities and use PETA as a main resource for guidnece/support (this will always be a collective team effort)

Next 10 years...

What does the future hold

  • Attempt to get the bill passed and become law across the rest of the states to make animal testing illegal consdering there are so many additional validated alternatives that are cheaper & more effective than testing on animals

END GOAL: MAKE ANIMAL TESTING ILLEGAL

END GOAL
