Clinton Wins the Presidency in 1992

-People were upset at Bush Sr. because he went back on his campaign promise not to raise taxes. But because of rising debt and the Gulf War, he had to.

-Clinton was seen as one of the everyday average American person.

-Moderate Liberal-Held both ideas of conservative and liberal

-Family Medical Leave Act-Guaranteed full-time employees 12 workweeks of unpaid leave for the birth and care of newborn, serious illness or to care for immediate family member.

-Brady Bill- gun-control act-Federal background checks for people who want to purchase a gun.

-Proposed universal healthcare reform fails. Failed attempt as reform headed by Hillary Clinton.

Republicans Take Over

-Republicans win majority in Congress and in amount of Governors in 1992.

-But not enough to win the presidency, Clinton wins again in 1996.

-NAFTA-response to the creation of the EU, gradual removal of trade restrictions among NA nations.

-GOALS:

1. promote economic growth

2. reduce prices

3. increase exports

4. encourage economic investment.

-Problems:

1. allow US manufacturers to outsource or relocate to Mexico because of lower cost of workers. Then Americans would be out of a job.

-270 Free Trade Agreements-Began an economic globalization allowing more free trade and lowering of tariffs.

-US supports a World Bank which helps developing nations with debt relief, healthcare, human rights, poverty and economic growth.

-Effect: Makes the US more of a global power and interconnected to world affairs and issues because our economy is now directly linked and dependent on other countries.

-Clinton's were involved and connected to many scandals, from affairs while he was governor to bad investment deals (destroying documents that they did property deals illegally.)

-Special Prosecutor investigates Clinton scandals and uncovers the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

-Clinton denies affair (with Monica Lewinsky) under oath, then admits that he lied under oath.

-House impeaches Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice.

-Clinton is tried and acquitted by the Senate.
