Responsibilities of PT and PTA

Intake

In the initial visit the PT will perform an examination of the patient. The PT will perform range of motion testing and ask the patient questions about their condition or procedures they have had. The PT will then create a treatment plan for the patient, the PT and PTA will then go over the patient's treatment plan.

Initial Visit

After a treatment plan has been made and the patient comes in for their regular sessions, the PTA will perform the various treatments with the patient. This could include various treatments such as, heat/ice, ultrasound therapy, EMS treatment, massage ect. The PTA will also teach the patients excercises to help strengthen their muscles. The PTA will also monitor any pain associated with treatment and exercise and can make adjustments as needed.

Treatment 2

Progress Evaluation

During treatment three the PTA will continue to monitor the patient as well as any progress or worsening of symptoms. After each treatment the PTA will document their findings in a report, and may notify the PT if they believe any changes need to be made to the patients treatment.

Treatment 3

At this point in the treatment the PT may do a progress examination to check the patient's progress and make any changes or modification necessary to the patient's treatment.

At this point in the treatment the patient should be seeing improvement and relief in pain or symptoms. The PT and PTA may collaborate on adding any exercises and may create a home treatment plan for the patient to continue treatment at home and prepare the patient for when they no longer need in person Physical Therapy treatments.

Treatment 4

The PTA will continue to work with the patient and perform their treatment as usual. The PTA will note anything significant in their report and give all of the information to the PT. Since the next visit would be the last visit for the patient, the PT will determine if the patient will need any further treatment. If so the PT will make a request for more treatments through the patient's insurance.

Treatment 5

As this is the last visit for the patient's treatment a PT may conduct and end of treatment examination on the patient. The PTA will also go over home mantinance and preventitive measures to prevent the patient from re-injuring themself and keep the patient healthy. The PT will conduct and end of treatment report and close out the patients treatment case.
