Master Kongzi was born in 551 BCE during the Spring and Autumn peroids. In english his name translates to Confucius. Durring his life, the states began to develop tention as people stopped believeing in the central government. This lead to the philosophy of legalism; the idea that there should be a strong state that is efficent and strong. There should be laws and punishment for breaking those laws. This was the main chinese philosophy through Confucius's life and into the warring peroids. However, Confucius believed in teaching morals and ideals rather than laws and punishments. He drew inspiration from the early Zhou dynasty to develop his philosophy, but he also developed many new ideas. Towards the end of the Spring and Autumn peroid, Confucius died in 497 BCE.
- "A young man should be respectful to his parents at home and to elders outside his home."
- "Real knowledge is to know the extent of ones ignorence."
- " If you control [...] people through punishment, they will avoid crime but have no personal sence of shame. If you govern them theough means of virtue and control them with propriety, the will grow their own sense of shame, and thus correct themselves."
Confucainism has no deities; rather, it is a religion based off of morals and ideals. It is build off of the idea that teaching punishments to crimes will not teach people. If you teach virtues and morals, people will develop sences of shame and correct themselves. This idea became very popular in the Qin and Han dynasties. The Chinese government, at the time, began teaching the ideas of confucianism as the state religion. Many tembles and structures were built during the adoption of Conducianism. There are two main holidays for confucians: Confucius's birthday and the Ching Ming festival. On Confucius's birthday, people celibrate through rituals. These include music, dancing, inscence, and chanting. The Ching Ming festival is held exactly 106 days after the winter solstice. It is a day to honor deseased family members and ancestors.
Confucainism developed in China in the early Han Dynasty and continued to develop in the surround areas. Many Confusian ideals were spread throughout Eastern Asia. By the fourth century, Confucianism had strong roots in Korea and Japan. In Korea, many people accepted the teachings of Confucius, but Buddhism remained the state religion. However, around the Korean Yi Dynasty in 1392, Confucianism replaced Buddhism as the state religion. Schools opened in Korea to study Confucianism which lasted all the way to the early 20th century. These schools places an emphasis on textual and traditional studies. However, the Yi dynasty ended with the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1911. When the Japanese withdrew from Korean after WWII, Confucianism was no longer popular with the state. Eventually, the government decided to no longer support Confucian groups.
There are few who still follow Confucanism as a religion; however, Confucian teachings have spread all over the world. In Korea and China, Confucian schools and temples have become museums. Many Confucian teachings have become a staple of modern day behavior. Sayings like "respect your elders" and "be honest and truthful" can be traced to Confucianiam and Confucius himself. One of the most common Confucian teachings is "Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire." This if refered to as the golden rule and is taught to children at young ages. While the religion of Confucianiam is declining, the teachings will live on for centuries to come.
- "When you see someone of worth, think how you may emulate."
- "When you see someone unworthy, examine your own character."
- "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous."
-"Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire."
