Ernest Rutherford was a pioneer of nuclear physics and he was the very first person ever to split an atom. He later received a Noble Prize in 1908 for his theory in atomic structure in Chemistry. He died of a strangulated hernia in Cambridge, England on October 19, 1937.
Rutherford's Atomic Theory
"Rutherford overturned Thomson's model in 1911 with his well-known gold foil experiment in which he demonstrated that the atom has a tiny, heavy nucleus. Rutherford designed an experiment to use the alpha particles emitted by a radioactive element as probes to the unseen world of atomic structure."
He announces the nuclear model of the atom.
