Introduction

Introduction

Ernest Rutherford was a pioneer of nuclear physics and he was the very first person ever to split an atom. He later received a Noble Prize in 1908 for his theory in atomic structure in Chemistry. He died of a strangulated hernia in Cambridge, England on October 19, 1937.

Rutherford's Atomic Theory

"Rutherford overturned Thomson's model in 1911 with his well-known gold foil experiment in which he demonstrated that the atom has a tiny, heavy nucleus. Rutherford designed an experiment to use the alpha particles emitted by a radioactive element as probes to the unseen world of atomic structure."

Birth

1871-Birth

  • On August 30, 1871 Ernest was born in Spring Grove, New Zealand

1989-Alfa and Beta Rays

  • On 1898 Rutherford discovers rays from radioactive materials are of two main types, which he names alpha and beta.

Radon

1899-Radioactive Gas

  • He discovers a radioactive gas, later to be named radon.

Sub-Atomic

Change

1902-Sub-Atomic Change

  • Ernest Rutherford announces formally that radioactivity is a manifestation of sub-atomic change.

Nuclear

Atom

1911-Nuclear Atom

He announces the nuclear model of the atom.

Atom

1917-Atom

  • Becomes the world's first successful alchemist, changing nitrogen into oxygen (he splits the atom).

1937-Death

Ernest Rutherford died 19th Oct 1937 and his ashes interred in Westminister Abbey
