The Kafka Trap

// Definition //

// The Kafka Trap //

A Kafka trap is a fallacy where it is assumed that someone is x if they deny being x since x would deny x. The title is taken from Franz Kafka's The Trial, a book written in Czech. This is fallacious because it conflates those who legitimately do not conduct a perceived infraction with others who have done so and are attempting to avoid punishment.

// Animal Farm //

This fallacy has only appeared once so far in Animal Farm. This was in chapter five before Mollie abandoned the farm.

  • Clover took Mollie aside and asked if she was contacting humans
  • Mollie repeatedly said no but Clover wasn't convinced
  • She used this and seeing a human as evidence to search Mollie's stall
