What is a joke ?

Definition

Definition

Jokes make us laugh because they have a surprise or shock twist at the end that upsets our expectations.

Structure

A joke often has two parts

The set-up ( or explanation)

Structure

Payoff (or punchline)

In this joke the set-up is:

  • The introduction, which sets the scene: "Two hunters are out in the woods..."
  • the conflict, which is when the hunter panics about his friend and phones the emergency services.
  • the conflict gets worse with his confusion about the instruction "first, let's make sure he's dead". the hunter thinks that the operator is telling him to kill his friend.

The set up

The pay off

Then comes the pay off, which is:

  • the punchline, climax or funny twist: the hunter shoots his friend. the friend actually isn't dead at the beginning of the joke, but he is by the end of it. his problem has been resolved or concluded.

Irony

for both irony and sarcasm, the surface meaning of what is said is different to what the speaker really means.

Irony

This is an example of irony, when something happens to confuse the characters and the audience is left with an unpredictable or unexpected ending.
