Sentence Improvement: Conciseness

Exercise A

Reduce each sentence or each pair of sentences to one sentence containing the construction called for in parentheses.

Example.

Mr. Smith, who is our mach teacher, also teaches Latin. (appositive phrase)

Mr. Smith, our math teacher, also teaches Latin.

Two

1. The Museum of the American Indian is in New York City. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is also there. (compound subject)

The Museum of the American Indian and the

Metropolitan Museum of Art are in New York City.

Sentence Improvement:

Subordination.

Exercise B

Combine each pair of sentences into one sentence by making one of the sentences into a dependent clause. You will need to introduce the dependent clause with words like after, although, as, because, before, since, or when. Use a comma after the dependent clause if the dependent clause

is at the beginning of the sentence.

One

Example:

Daniel was late. He received a demerit.

Because Daniel was late, He received a demerit.

Two

1. Judah sold Joseph to the merchants. He knew his father's heart would be broken.

Judah sold Joseph to the merchants although he knew his father's heart would be broken.

Sentence Improvement: Active Voice

Exercise C

The active voice is usually more natural

and emphatic than the passive, though occasionally the passive voice is required.

Rewrite each sentence, changing the passive voice to the active voice. (See p.112.)

1. Airplanes were used first for combat by the French during World War I.

The French used airplanes for combat first during World War I.

Sentence Improvement: Parallelism

Rewrite each sentence, correcting faulty

parallelism. (See p. 155.)
