Avery Grambs is a seventeen year-old girl who lives with her sister and her sister's boyfriend. After being pulled out of school by Grayson Hawthorn, grandchild of Tobias Hawthorn, he told her that she was the heir to all of Tobias's assets and a very large sum of money. Still in shock from the news, she is ordered to live in the Hawthorn House for a year to keep the money and everything. If she leaves the house then all of the money will go to charity, not his grandsons, not to his daughter, to charity.
Now to give you and idea of how much money Avery inherited, Tobias Hawthorn is worth forty-six point two billion dollars.
Avery never asked to be put in his will, never knew who Tobias Hawthorn was, and certainly didn't want any death threats from anyone trying to challenge the will.

Once Avery inheirited the money, she became a big target because she was now worth more than a billion dollars and lived in the Hawthorn house which was a huge mansion. Now she had to be aware of death threats and possibly getting killed. And just the imaginable happenes; she gets shot at.
It happened shortly after it turned dark. It wasn't that dark yet because Avery and Jameson could still see where they were going, but it wasn't bright enough to reveal the face of the shooter.
Where did it happen?
This takes place in the Black woods when Avery and Jameson are looking for another clue to find out why she was chosen to be the heir.
When Avery is shot at, pieces of flying bark get caught in her skin and as a result, needs to get stiches.
It is suspected that someone from inside the gates of the Hawthorn House had to let someone in secretly.
Security cameras are checked, and no footage of anyone entering from outsdie the gates is found.
Finaly, Oren, Avery's bodyguard, concludes that the shooter must have used the underground tunnels. There is one entrace from outside the gates of the mansion and 2 from the inside. The shooter must have used the outside entrance.
It couldn't have been Jameson who was with her the whole time. Not her bodygaurd Oren, and definently not her sister Libby. If no one had entered the Hawthorn House that day it must have been somone within the gates. Who did it?

From the begginging of the book Drake has been an abusive boyfriend to Libby, and now that Avery has inheirted all this money he wants to get back with Libby. After Libby refuses, he leaks information about Libby and Avery to the news. It could be that he shot Avery because she was mad that Libby didn't get back with him.
I rate this book a 5/5. This book on my top 3 favorite books to read now. the reason I love this book so much is that the author builds suspence so well and the characters are well made and so are their character development. This book is so good I want to continue reading the series. Overall this book kept me hanging on the edge of my seat and I loveeeed how detailed it was. I could really imagine the characters speaking and doing what I was reading in my head.
Of course I would reccomend this book to people who like mysteries and suspence and can handle a clifhanger even if they do not want to continue reading the rest of the series.
