His parents split up when he was very young, and he and his brother split up and traveled between Indiana and Connecticut for several years. He later moved back to Maine with his mother and brother. There he graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966.
King went to the University of Maine at Orono. After graduating with a degree in English in 1970, he tried to become a teacher but couldnt. He took a job in a laundry and wrote stories in his spare time until 1971, when he began working as an English teacher at Hampden Academy. It was that year that he also married Tabitha Spruce.
In 1973, King sold his first novel, "Carrie". The book became a huge success after it was published the year after, and that was how King started writing books.
He published several books per year for much of the 1980s and 1990s. Actress Kathy Bates and actor James Caan starred in the movie Misery in 1990, with Bates winning an Oscar for her performance as Annie Wilkes.
The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and based on one of his stories, became another amazing movie with multiple Oscar nominations. Stephen's 1978 novel The Stand became a 1994 miniseries with Molly Ringwald and Gary Sinise in the lead.
King and his wife divide their time between Florida and Maine. They have three children, Naomi Rachel, Joseph Hillstrom, and Owen Phillip.
Outside of writing, King is a music fan. He even sometimes plays guitar and sings in a band called Rock Bottom Remainders with other authors like Dave Barry, Barbara Kingsolver and Amy Tan. The group has performed a number of times to raise money for charity.
