plot

The Book Thief, narrated by death himself, is about Liesel Meminger a nine year old girl moving to Germany near the start of World War 2 to live with her foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann. She makes friends with Rudy Steiner, her neighbor, who falls in love with liesel. Throughout the story she learns the art of stealing with Rudy, reading, and to love a Jew. The Hubermanns invited Max Vandenburg, a jew, into their home. Liesel and Max become very close in his days in her basement. So much so Max writes two stories about their friendship. Due to Hans publically giving a Jew bread, Max has to leave. Hans then is drafted into the military where he breaks his leg. Liesel soon later sees Max in one of the Jew parades and her hate for Hitler grew stronger than ever before. The mayor’s wife, Ilsa Hermann, encourages her to write. Liesel stole books from her and she welcomed it. Every Night she would go into the basement to write. This saved her when an air raid went down on Himmel Street. She was later found and saw the bodies of her foster parents and her love Rudy. She lived with the Mayor and Ilsa until she was old enough to live on her own. She worked with Rudy’s father at his shop. One day Max walked in and joy override them both. Liesel died of old age in Sydney, Australia.

Setting

Setting

Germany during World War II on Himmel Street of Molching. A small town full of poor and rich people. The Mayor lived up on the hill along with the other rich people. It was always frosty and grey and kids playing soccer in the neighborhood.

Conflict

The main conflict in this novel was person vs person. From the Hubermanns, students at school, to Hitler causing the death of her family. She fought with Mrs. Hermann about letting her foster mother go and about her books. Leisel “fought” with Rudy about getting a kiss. She fought with herself about Max, why she didn’t kiss Rudy, and Why it had to be her to live. She fought with death for the longest time. He was intrigued.

Resolution

The bombing of Himmel Street was thought to be the end for all, yet Leisel survived. She saw her foster parents, the accordion, and her love Rudy. They Mayor and his wife took her so she could live with them after the bombing. She worked at the Steiner shop and in later years Max walks in and says hello to Leisel. Joy filled them both at the site of seeing each other again. She lived a long full life and died in Sydney, Australia.
