1845

Horace Mann and Samuel Gridley Howe introduce standardized testing to the Boston School System as they were trying to gather objective information about teaching quality."

Universities needed methods to asset students. This led to the establishment of the College Entrance Examination Board and the introduction entrance exams to administrate 973 test-takers from the United States and Europe

1916-1917

Louis M. Terman created the Stanford-Binet Intelligent Scale to test students educational settings and adapted from the 1905 Binet-Simon scale (1916)

Scientists create the use of the Army Alpha and Beta Test to recruit during World War One (1917)

Carl Brigham created the first SAT after the works on the Army Alpha and Beta Test. Theses were used as admission tools for Harvard before in 1934 and was required for all students. SAT are also still around today

Everett Franklin Lindquist created the need for new admission test that focuses more on achievement than cognitive reasoning this being known as ACT Test (American College Test)

The Elementary and Secondary Act (ESSA) is passed as part of Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty" and provides federal funds for low-income schools and required testing in schools.

No Child Left Behind act is introduced. Standardized Testing became accountable through funds. Began Federally mandating high-stakes test. However changed in December 2015, Congress pass Every Student Succeeds Act to replace NCLB.

Testing scores were lower in 2021 due to the pandemic occurring as "Test scores that are as low as, or nearly as low as, the prior year’s results would confirm the severity of the pandemic’s impact on student learning." Focusing more on results aspects to seek improvement among theses test.
