DISCOVERY
Many sources claim this sequence was first discovered or "invented" by Leonardo Fibonacci. The Italian mathematician, who was born around A.D. 1170, was initially known as the Leonardo of Pisa. In the 19th century, historians came up with the nickname Fibonacci (roughly meaning "son of the Bonacci clan") to distinguish the mathematician from another famous Leonardo of Pisa.

LEONARDO FIBONACCI (1170-1240)
Fibonacci was born around 1170 to Guglielmo, an Italian merchant and customs official. Guglielmo directed a trading post in Bugia (Béjaïa) in modern-day Algeria), the capital of the Hammadid empire. Fibonacci travelled with him as a young boy, and it was in Bugia (Algeria) where he was educated that he learned about the Hindu–Arabic numeral system.
