Dan Cody introduced Gatsby to a life of luxury. When Cody died, Gatsby used his experience to become rich. This shows that Gatsby owes most of his riches to Cody.

Wolfsheim refused to come to Gatsby's funeral because he didn't want to be associated with Gatsby's death. This shows that they weren't really as close as Nick thought.
Tom hits Myrtle because she didn't obey him in chapter 2. This symbolizes that Tom doesn't think of Myrtle more than a mistress and he doesn't care for her feelings.
