Species become classified as introduced species(also invasive species) if they are not native to a country but are brought there. Australia is home to hundreds of introduced species with some of the biggest being the European honey bee, European rabbit and red fox two of which have quickly became the biggest pests in Australia wildlife. These animals have shown the ability to disrupt our extremely unique, diverse and fragile ecosystem and leading to the endangerment/extinction of many native animals.
Many things are being done to combat invasive species, the government has began to pay people to kill 'pest animals', mainly with people getting reward for foxes scalps. There have also been diseases created to control the population of other invasive species with rabbits having the myxoma virus which only affects rabbits released into the wild to control the rabbit population. Fencing and trapping is also being used to remove invasive species
European rabbits are one of the biggest threats to Australia wildlife as they have shown the ability to breed at an exponential rate and continue to increase in population despite having multiple predators. They compete with native wildlife for food. damage vegetation and degrade the land.. They can also ringbark trees and shrubs killing them. They also prevent plant breeding due to eating seads and seadling. They especially cause problems when after a drought there is little food and they eat whatever they can find. They were first introduced to Australia in 1859 when a rich englishmen released some into the wild all because he enjoyed hunting, to now when rabbits have been estimated to have reached hundreds of millions in population at various points in time.
The biggest ecosytem being affected by invasive species in Australia is our aquatic ecosystems as they are extremely delicate and the introduction of animals like the seastars, crabs, microscopic dinoflagallates, shelfish and alagae. These are leading to the extinction of native fish and coral due to the food chain being disrupted.
