South Sudan, located in North Africa, is known for high poverty rates, a dense population, low education rates, and high rates of disease.
In 2011, South Sudan, priorly known as the republic of sudan, gained independence from Egypt and the United Kingdom making them the worlds newest country. Since gaining their freedom, the government of South Sudan has been attempting to establish their own economy, society, and national identity with the monetary help from numerous countries including the United States. Although they are receiving help, they are still not yet stable or developed enough to be a fully functioning, stable country.
Having high poverty, homelessness, and dense population rates due to the rebuilding of South Sudan causes high disease and sickness rates that hospitals, pharmacies, and health ceners are unable to treat because of their overall lack of resources. These illnesses are then more apt to spread and get worse.
The U.S. Government is the leading international donor to South Sudan, providing food food, nutrition, protection, clean water, and sanitation, as well as services such as health care and education
Overall, the US has given South Sudan over $10 billion worth of money, services, and supplies.
The lack of attention towards healthcare has caused Only 2% (52 USD) of Sudanese federal funds go towards healthcare, whereas the United States is 9% (1.5 trillion USD) each year. They have the 2nd highest growth rate in the world. With their immense poverty along their countries growth, more people are falling below the povery line.
Majority of South Sudanese people rely on farming and agriculture to survive. South Sudan does not have a strong, stable economy and there is little money in circulation to even be spent on healthcare.
Due to the war, there is just one physician per 65,574 people. The only place that you can get reliable healthcare is in the captal Juba. If you have a sereous illness or have an emergency you would have to go to a neighboring country. Nearly 75% of all deaths in South Sudan are due to preventable conditions such as diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia. there are not enough healthcare workers nor resources to properly treat or diagnose patients.
