The M.A.I.N. Causes of WWI:

Before the War-

Pre - WWI

Militarism:

- There was a lot of glorification of the military, and people began to become very militaristic during this time in history.

- Strong militaries in nations were seen as power.

- People wanted to fight for the country and were very interested in militarism.

Alliances:

- There was a lot of distrust between countries, and alliances began to form.

- Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy formed the Triple Alliance to protect Germany from France.

- More and more Alliances began to form which caused a lot of tension.

- During this time, countries were being extremely competitive about land and resources especially in Europe.

- This competition for ownership of land and raw resources added to the tension.

Nationalism:

- Nationalism: Having a deep pride in one's country.

- People became very nationalistic during this time.

- People believed that their country was better than others and they began to force their culture upon others.

Chemical Warfare:

Chemical Warfare

- The German military used the first form of chemical warfare when they launched a chlorine attack on the Allies’ trenches.

- Chemical warfare would continue to develop technologically and end up causing 1,300,000 casualties throughout WWI.

- Mustard Gas was used to attack opposing sides’ trenches and caused a respiratory and skin reaction. It also caused blindness.

Gas Masks

Gas masks were worn by soldiers to prevent the inhalation of the toxic gas attacks.

Tanks:

Tanks

- The first time tanks were used in battle was by the British during part of the Battle of the Somme.

- The tank was created to be more powerful in battle and be able to withstand gunfire and other types of attacks.

- It was sometimes ineffective when it would get stuck in the mud or run out of fuel but overall changed technology in war significantly at this time.

Trench Warfare:

Trench Warfare

- Trench Warfare was introduced during WW1.

- Systems of trenches were dug into the ground and were used as a place soldiers would use for cover during the war.

- Living conditions were extremely poor in trenches and disease spread fast.

- Opposing nations would attack each other's trenches with explosives and gas during the war.

Newly Introduced Motorized Guns and Weapons that were used in the war include:

- Heavy artillery

- Machine guns

- Trench guns

- Dangerous explosives

- Airplanes

Airplanes played a big role in the war.

The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand:

June 28, 1914:

- Archduke Franz Ferdinand went to Sarajevo in Austria for his wedding anniversary.

- The area he was visiting was controlled by Bosnia at the time and they were in the middle of the Pan Slavism Movement.

- The Serbian terror group “The Black Hand” was plotting against him, and within that group was Gavrilo Princip.

- On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed.

World War I Begins:

- On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia and the war begins.

- In August of 1914, many countries enter the war.

- They include Germany, Russia, France, Britain, Belgium, and Japan.

- The United States proclaims neutrality.

The Battle of Tannenberg:

August 26, 1914

- Germany attacks the Russian Army and takes 92,000 prisoners.

- Germany defeats Russia in one of the first major battles of WWI.

Battle of Ypres:

October 19, 1914

- Germany launched an attack in Ypres.

- The French launched an unsuccessful counterattack.

- France had 50,000 casualties, Belgium had 30,000 casualties, and Germany suffered 130,000 casualties.

The Lusitania Sinks:

May 7, 1915

- The British ocean liner, Lusitania, was attacked by a German U-boat.

- It sinks and kills 1200 people including 128 Americans.

The Battle of Verdun:

February 21, 1916

- There is a battle between Germany and France in Verdun, France.

- There are 700,000 casualties and 300,000 killed in this battle.

- Many French villages were destroyed.

The Battle of the Somme

July 1, 1916

- The Allies tried to attack the western front, but it was highly unsuccessful.

- This battle was considered the bloodiest battle for the British Army.

The Zimmerman Telegram:

- The Zimmerman Telegram was intercepted by the British.

- It was a telegram from Germany to Mexico proposing for Mexico to attack the United States to try to get its states back.

- Germany was offering to ally with Mexico.

The United States Enters the War:

- The United States declares war on Germany.

- America joins the Allies against Germany and provides a lot of military support.

- They were neutral in the war, but after seeing the Zimmerman Telegram, they finally jumped into the war.

The Fourteen Points For Peace:

- The Fourteen Points was made by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson about his vision for ending WWI and preventing something like it from happening again.

Russia Leaves the War:

- Russia signs a treaty with the Central Powers ending its participation in the war.

- Russia’s government had just been overthrown by Vladimir Lennon and a group of communists and Russia wanted to focus on their government which had them end up pulling out of the war.

Germany Surrenders and Armistice is Signed:

November 11, 1918:

- All nations agreed to stop fighting while the peace terms were negotiated and figured out.

- The armistice, an agreement to stop fighting is signed by the countries involved in the war.

1919-1920

The War Ends:

June 28, 1919:

- Germany and the Allies signed the Treaty of Versailles which formally ended the war.

- The League of nations was introduced after the first world war to resolve international disputes.
