Battlefield Weapons
The battle of Yorktown was the last battle before the Revolutionary War, occuring from September to October of 1781. George Washington was a commander for this battle, along with Charles Cornwallis for the British. There were almost 9 thousand casualties, with about 96% of them were British. No American soldiers were missing or captured, opposed to about 7,000 British troops being captured.
James Armistead was one of several African American spies during the revolutionary war, and served during the battle of Yorktown under a French aristorcat. He also served as a double agent. He posed as a runaway slave to cross British territory and made his way to Yorktown to gather information. He would trick the British soldiers by passing false information to redirect them from Yorktown.
During the battle of Yorktown, women were an essential part of these battles. Often, they would go with their husbands and stay at camps. They were helpful and would participate in riots and other movements. During this time, women managed farms and businesses. Women provided necessary materials and provided for the soldiers. A few women would even disguise themselves as men and fight on the battlefront.
The battle of Yorktown officially begun on September 28th, 1781. The first attack was General George Washington's command. He commanded about 17,000 French and American troops against British General Cornwallis. They blocked Cornwallis so he couldn't leave Yorktown, which eventually lead to Cornwallis surrendering. He surrendered on October 17th, 1781, officially ending the battle.
Life for soldiers was different depending on where they were. America at the time had minute men and militia. Minute men had to be able to respond at a minutes notice and be on scene as soon as possible. During the battle of Yorktown, the colonies had more soldiers than the British.
Field gun
During the battle, cannons included field guns and siege guns. These were used by both the French and American and the British. Siege guns were heavy, so they had limited mobility. However, field guns were lightweight and easier to use. The mortar was used to fire while airborne to rain fragments or shells from the bombs onto enemies.
Howitzer
France helped us throughout these battles and the revolutionary war. For the battle of Yorktown, the French helped by sending in reinforcements to the colonies. The French soldiers helped trap General Cornwallis which made him surrender because he had nowhere to go.
Some popular activities or entertainment during this time were horse racing and dancing. Sewing and cooking were also popular. Plays were also held, along with other live entertainment like music or acrobats.
The British had the highest ranked medical services in all of Europe. Many say however, that Ben Franklin "invented" American medicine. A field hospital was set up by George Washington's old friend, Dr. James Craik. He was a surgeon and a chief physician during the battle of Yorktown. Women were also appointed to medical positions in this hospital. However, if any injury was too serious and they couldn't treat, they would be sent to Virginia to get treated at an American hospital.
Popular food items in the battle of Yorktown and throughout the battles leading up to the revolutionary war were, oysters, fish, corn bread, ham, and other seafood especially in the New England colonies.
