Shoebox Glider

Austin Grosdidier and only Austin

During this project I was tasked to take a shoebox and make a glider! But after that we had to use what I was learning in my math class to predict how far my glider could possibly go. In the end I had a pretty cool looking glider and 5 inequalities that predicted how far my glider would go. Pretty cool project in my opinion.

Glider Name "Scrappy"

Scrappy's story

The name of my glider is scrappy. I chose this name because of the look of my glider. It was lots of different pieces thrown together, making what looks like a pile of random pieces. What also inspired the name was the doubt people and I had on my glider but in the end it actually started to work.

Where I got my idea

I researched many different types of gliders. For example, I looked at many hang glider designs. Hang glider wings have a dip in the wings to help catch air which gives them more lift. That is what I based the first version of my glider on.

Design Ideas

Materials I used in the original design

Materials Needed

In my original design the materials that I planned to use were:

  • Hot Glue
  • Shoebox(Required)
  • Tape
  • Pencils
  • Umbrella rods
  • Umbrella fabric

My idea was to reuse the umbrella fabric and rods from a broken umbrella. The reason for this is that the fabric on umbrella is impermeable meaning that air can't pass through it making it better to create lift.

Change of plans new design

Because of my first design not working I created a new design with cardboard wings a popular choice among my peers. To my surprise it was the best decision I made during this project. I started with making simple boxy cardboard wings thinking of how when birds glide they have a large wingspan. Over the course of the project this design evolved in many different ways.

Design Idea 2.0

Materials needed:

  • Hot Glue
  • Shoebox(required)
  • cardboard
  • tape

The plan this time was to make everything out of cardboard and hold it together with glue and duct tape making perfect for the name scrappy.

My glider trials

During this project I did 5 different trials. Each had different results and each time the glider had new features and once even a whole new design.

How far could of Scrappy gotten

?

Trial 1

The first trial of my project weighed 166g and was just the shoebox without any modifications. My former partner dropped it from 3m and it traveled 10cm because of the way we are instructed to throw the box.

Trial 2

Trial 2 weighed 218g and was dropped form 3m but made it 0 cm. This trial was just a test to see if the pencil counter weight I made would work, it did and it kept the box from tilting to the side.

Trial three

This trial weighed 189g and was dropped from 3m. The glider had no gain in distance. This time I had wings on my glider. They were supposed to work like a hang gliders wings but they didn't because they were too small so I had to come up with a new idea.

Whole new design

This time I had a whole new design that gave my project the name scrappy. This time my wings were made of cardboard and supported by cardboard, the cone was made of cardboard also, this all was held together by duct tape and glue. The glider weighed 338g and was dropped from 3m then traveled 75cm.

Hope you liked my glider and presentation.
