Atomic bombs are terrible, destructive wepons. How ever, the science behind them is cool, to say the least.
History
Only two nukes have ever been used in warfare: Little Boy and Fat Man. Little Boy was detonated over Heroshima and Fat Man was detonated over Nagasaki.
Fission
Nuclear fission is a chain reaction where a nutron (a tiny piece of an atom) smashes into a big atom. The big atom then releases more nutrons to continue the reaction and a lot of energy.
Little Boy
Little Boy achieved fission by shooting a hollow uranium bullet onto a cylindrical uranium target. Then the stray nutrons in the bullet created fission.
Fat Man
Fat Man acheived fission by using high explosives to compress a plutonium core. When compressed, the core released a burst of nutrons to start the fission.
Closing words
All in all, the dropping of nukes was a disateraus thing. To a reasonable race just seeing the terrible short term and long term effects whould have stopped us forever. But no, we kept on making them. Humans now have the power to destroy Earth.
