Overo Lethal White Syndrome (OLWS)

What is OLWS?

  • Overo Lethal White Syndrome is a genetic mutation that have an effect on horses with white markings.
  • This can be leathal in foals. Ones with 2 copies of this gene are born with blue eyes. They will also have intesetines that will not fully develop.

What is an overo?

  • An overo is a coat pattern.
  • This is usually where white markings do not cross over the horses back nor the withers and tail.
  • They are at greatest risk of carrying the disease.
  • 94%of framed overos are carriers.

Age, breed, and color relating to OLWS.

Age:

Typically they are born with it and will pass within the first few days. Grey horses and others may turn fully white when old in age.

Breed:

American paint horses, American minature horses, Half-arabians, Thoroughbreds, and Quater horses with lots of white markings

What are symptoms of OLWS?

Is there any cure or treatment?

Horses with OLWS will usually show signs of having colic such as:

  • Rolling or Thrashing
  • Sweating
  • Rapid Breathing
  • Distended belly

These horses will have blue eyes as well as a white coat.

There is no treatment for OLWS. Surgery remains unsuccessful. OLWS is lethal meaning death.

What are some scientific studies and what are the results?

Phenotypically, this gene causes lack of skin pigmintation. This is what also makes the white coat color. OLWS is described as white markings on the ventral and lateral on the torso and neck. Tobiano is where a pattern has more white on the dorsal cervical, lumber region, and the legs.
