Environmental Issues

Problems

Environmental Issues

There are many environmental issues that are currently greatly affected the country of Sri Lanka.

-loss of biodiversity

-acidification

-soil erosion

wildlife populations drastically reduced

-pollution: caused by increasing loads of industrial waste

- loss of endangered species

Though there are many problems currently occurring in Sri Lanka, the main issues are climate change and deforestation.

Why is this happening?

Climate Change is occurring in Sri Lanka due to do human action. The emission of C02 into the atmosphere by humans has led to a gradual increase in temperature of the earth.

Deforestation in Sri Lanka occurs in clear lands for agricultural purposes, create plantations, and to provide fuel and wood.

Causes of These Issues

Climate Change

Climate change in Sri Lanka causes extreme weather occurrances, such as flooding, which destroys thousands of homes. Also, due to the excess of still water, Dengue Fever has increases among the people. Natural resources are relied upon by the poor because many are workers in the agricutural sector. The shift in climate leads to less crop growth and therefore lower incomes are to people in the agricultural sector. Floods, droughts, increasing levels of seawater displace homes and there is an increase in malnutrition and infectious diseases. On top of the reduced livelihood security, the frequency of droughts, floods and rising sea waters in Sri Lanka is displacing communities due to shelter damage. Additionally, the conditions lead to malnutrition and the increased incidence of infectious disease. The combination of high temperatures and poor hygiene lead to bacterial diseases.

Contribution to Poverty

  • Climate change causes extreme weather occurrences, such as flooding, which destroys thousands of homes.
  • Due to the excess of still water, Dengue Fever has increases among the people
  • .Natural resources are relied upon by the poor because many are workers in the agricultural sector.
  • shift in climate leads to less crop growth and therefore lower incomes are given to people in the agricultural sector.
  • Floods, droughts, increasing levels of seawater displace homes and there is an increase in malnutrition and infectious diseases.

Deforestation

leads to:

  • flooding
  • landslides
  • soil erosion

Deforestation

  • all of these cause displacement of homes and communities. People lose their homes.

Impacts of Environment on Economy

  • Sri Lanka's main sources of income come from tea and rubber industries.

Impacts

on

Economy

  • This has an inverse effect on the economy and environment where the economy prospers while the environment suffers.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions

  • Most carbon dioxide emissions come from the packaging and factory processing aspect of tea and rubber production.

  • It is around 44%-47% carbon emissions of the total tea and rubber process.

  • This is a result of the need for other specific materials like cardboard or plastic.

CO2 emissions

  • Rubber has a larger amount of carbon dioxide emissions than tea because the rubber trees are carbon sinks that release the gas when chopped down.

Deforestation

Deforrestation

  • Tea and rubber production also leads to massive amounts of deforestation in order to make space for plantations.

  • In 2016, Sri Lanka had a tree cover of 29.7% compared to 70% in the 1800s.
  • Illustrates the drastic rate at which forests are being cut down.

  • Majority of green forests in Sri Lanka are artificial growth plantations that have only a single species of plant which are harvested for goods.

Is anything being done to prevent?

Solutions?

  • Sri Lanka has multiple of methods to try to prevent more harm to the environment.

  • There are many policies and organizations that try to combat deforestation and reduce CO2 emissions.

Carbon

Emissions

Carbon emissions

  • Human and Environment Development Organization (HEDO) focuses on lowering carbon emissions for rubber industries.

  • Instead of burning firewood which realises a lot of CO2, the organization developed a new method of factory work using sawdust waste and locating the factories near rivers and streams to use renewable energy.

  • This drastically reduced the amount of carbon emissions from rubber processing factories.

Deforestation

Deforestation

  • Since 1929, there have been many attempts to conserve and protect forests.

  • There is a federal section that was created in 1997 called the Ministry of Forestry and Environment which solely focuses on forest conservation

  • Many policies tried to keep businesses from taking over and using deforestation to make land for their plantations, but there are many loopholes and illegal deforestation which the local force does not try to stop.

Is Envrionmental Damage Necessary?

  • The three major sectors of the economy that improve and help the country develop are services, agricultural, and industrial sectors.

Is damage

necessary?

  • The country will most likely have to sacrifice environment since it mainly relies on agriculture and manufactaring to prosper.

  • While the services aspect, like tourism and banking and real-estate, do make up the majority of the economy, the sector itself is an unreliable source of economic development since tourism can fluctuate and be irregular.
