Estates General Meeting

  • held in the Versailles
  • assembly composed of the 3 estates who had power to decide on levying new taxes and undertake reforms
  • concerns of economic situations
  • many dissatisfied, wanting t make matters into their own hands
  • Fun Fact: very rare for a person to move up in status from the 3rd Estate to the 2nd Estate

Tennis Court Oath Taken

  • the nonpriveleged third estate were locked out of Versailles during an assembly
  • in reaction to that, they moved to a nearby tennis court

Fun Fact: took an oath that stated they would never separate unit a constitution had been written for France

July 14, 1789

The Storming of the Bastille

  • Third estate in fear that the King would arrest their new constituted National Assembly
  • went to block off the Bastille in protest

Fun Fact: the representation showed power against the King

Late July-Early August, 1789

Great Fear

  • a period of panic and riot by the peasants and others
  • set up rumors by the king and 1st and 2nd estate at an attempt to overthrow the 3rd estate

  • an attempt to reorganize the Roman Catholic Church
  • Many catholics were against the Revolution
  • had confiscated church lands in an attempt to create a new administrative and financial framework for the church
  • in response, number of bishops were reduced, have citizens elect bishops/priests, and have the state pay clergy's wages.

  • a system of indirecct voting
  • influenced by enlightment ideas and the American Revolution

  • proclamation of the abolishment of the monarchy
  • established French Republic

  • unwilling to cede his power to the revolutionary government

Fun Fact: accused and found guilty of treason

  • condemned for death

Committee of Public Safety established/Reign of Terror,

  • 17,000 killed in France
  • citizens careful of thir actions to avoid being executed
  • no opposition to the revolutionary government

Fun Fact: executed by Guillotine

October 16, 1793

Marie Antoinette executed

  • The King wife, nine months after his execution
  • convicted for treason against French Republic

Fun Fact: guilty of conspiring againt the French Republic (with foreign powers)

July 28, 1794

Reign of Terror ends

  • Robespierre and supported were executed
  • known as the fall of Robespierre

Fun Fact: accused, condemned, and guillotined
